Twitch in July 2026: Passkeys, GIFs in Chat and an AI Assistant on Sponsorships

July 2026 on Twitch was a month of features, not headlines. Almost everything announced touches the everyday: how you log in, what you may post in chat, what the app shows you, and who reads along during your sponsorships. Here is everything that landed in July.

๐Ÿ” Logging in without a password: passkeys are coming

The most important change of the month, as I see it: Twitch announced support for passkey login. Instead of a password you confirm with a fingerprint, face recognition or your device PIN.

Why that is more than convenience: a passkey cannot be phished. It lives on your device and only works on the real Twitch domain โ€” a cloned login page simply gets nothing. For an account carrying subs, payouts and possibly a whole channel, this is the most meaningful change since two-factor login arrived.

๐Ÿ’ฌ GIFs in chat โ€” Tier 2 and 3 only, for now

Twitch is running a limited test that lets Tier 2 and Tier 3 subscribers post GIFs straight into chat. A test, not a rollout, and the tier requirement says the rest: moving images in chat become a sub perk, not a default. Whether it survives contact with a large chat is the real question.

๐Ÿ“– Stories are turning into stream recaps

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy explained where the Stories feed is heading: away from loose posts, towards recaps of streams you missed. If you have little time, you should be able to catch up on what happened on the channels you follow. Comments on posts are planned, and the feed moves further forward in the app.

That is the honest part of it: Stories has been a feature in search of a purpose. "You weren't there, here's what you missed" is a purpose.

๐Ÿค– An AI assistant reads along during sponsorships

Sponsorship deals now come with an AI assistant attached. It watches brand safety and, in Twitch's words, offers "real-time tips to help you stay aligned with the advertiser deliverables".

Useful for anyone who has ever broken a requirement by accident. But it is also an assistant listening while you stream, and that is worth knowing before you sign the next deal.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ "Twitch, Clip That"

The voice command for Auto Clips rolled out more widely in July: you say it, and the last 30 seconds become a clip without your hands leaving the keyboard. There is enough to say about it โ€” including the always-on listening โ€” that it got its own article here: clipping by voice.

๐ŸŽฎ Advertising you can play

Through Amazon Ads, July saw a playable Palworld demo running directly on Twitch: 15 minutes, in the browser, no install. For Twitch it is an ad format, for viewers it is a game in the ad break. My guess is this was a trial balloon rather than a one-off.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Parental controls for teen accounts

Twitch announced parental controls for teen accounts. After months of debate about age ratings and youth protection this was coming; what stands out is how long it took.

๐Ÿ“ฑ The app is testing free scrolling

The mobile app is testing free scrolling through content instead of clicking along fixed navigation paths. The comparison to TikTok is obvious and probably the whole point.

๐ŸŽ Summer Drop Fest 2026

The single biggest event of the month ran from 10 to 24 July: Summer Drop Fest 2026, with rewards across more than 45 games โ€” among them Apex Legends, Fortnite, League of Legends, Marvel Rivals, Overwatch, Dead by Daylight and Street Fighter 6.

Two routes: watch time in the matching category, usually one to six hours, or a new sub or gift sub. One detail that is easy to miss: Prime subs and automatic renewals did not count. If you simply let your Prime sub roll over in July, the sub drops passed you by.

Which badges came out of it is in the July roundup.

๐ŸŽช TwitchCon San Diego: passes are on sale

Passes for TwitchCon San Diego 2026 went on sale on 22 July. The convention runs 13 to 15 November 2026 at the San Diego Convention Center.

Two things worth remembering: prices go up on 1 September, and Klarna instalments are available until 13 October. A ticket also gets you one of the two TwitchCon badges.

๐ŸŽ“ Streamer University 2026: the numbers

Kai Cenat's event has become a force of its own. Roughly 300,000 concurrent viewers at peak, 50 million watch hours in total โ€” about 15 percent of the entire platform that week. It briefly added 1.1 million extra viewers, roughly double last year's figure.

Two consequences: invited creators get fast-tracked to Partner, and in 2027 Streamer University heads to Europe.

โš ๏ธ A scam worth knowing about

July saw messages circulating that promised a refund of withheld tax. To be clear: Twitch does not issue tax withholding refunds. If you get one of those, delete it and enter your account or login details nowhere. Payout questions belong in the official pages of your Creator Dashboard, nowhere else.

Where all of this comes from

The announcements come from the official Twitch blog, from twitchcon.com, and from the weekly newsletter by Zach Bussey (TOS.gg), who has been covering Twitch news more thoroughly than any press release for years. If you want to go deeper, that is the place โ€” what I do here is boil it down to what is left for viewers and collectors.

What changed on BadgeBase itself in the same month is in the July site recap. And so no drop slips past you: subscribe to the calendar or take a look at the timeline.
