About Minecraft
Minecraft is a sandbox survival game by Mojang Studios. Markus "Notch" Persson created it in Java and released a public alpha on 17 May 2009, and the full release followed on 18 November 2011 for PC. It has since been ported to most current systems, including consoles, Android and iOS. Microsoft bought Mojang and the Minecraft brand in 2014 for 2.5 billion US dollars.
Players explore a procedurally generated, practically endless world made of blocks, gather resources, craft tools and build whatever they want. The game offers Survival, Creative, Hardcore and Adventure modes, alone or in multiplayer, and spans three dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether and the End.
With more than 400 million copies sold, it is listed by Wikipedia as the best-selling video game of all time. A Minecraft Movie followed in 2025.
