Strafe

Strafe is a first person shooter with roguelike elements developed by Pixel Titans and published by Devolver Digital. Funded through a Kickstarter campaign that raised $207,000, it was released on 9 May 2017 for Windows, macOS and PlayStation 4, with a Linux version in March 2018 (Wikipedia).

The game imitates the look and pace of 1990s shooters such as Quake, and its marketing parodied video game commercials from that era. Levels are semi procedurally generated, and dying resets your upgrades. At the start of each run you choose a shotgun, machine gun or railgun, buy upgrades from merchants along the way and unlock modifiers with tokens earned in the campaign. Enemies burst into exaggerated amounts of blood that stay on the walls.

Reviews were mixed overall, with a Metacritic score of 64, although GameSpot gave it 8 out of 10.
