This War of Mine

This War of Mine is a 2D survival strategy game developed and published by the Polish studio 11 bit studios. It was released on 14 November 2014 for Windows, macOS and Linux, followed by mobile versions in 2015 and console editions up to the Final Cut for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2022 (Wikipedia).

Instead of soldiers, the game follows civilians sheltering in a ruined house in the fictional besieged city of Pogoren, drawing on the Siege of Sarajevo. By day snipers keep the group inside to cook, craft, trade and treat injuries. By night one survivor scavenges nearby locations and may help or rob other people. The siege ends with a ceasefire after a random number of days. The game has sold over 9 million copies, and in 2020 Poland put it on the recommended reading list for high schools, a first for a video game.
