Twitch in August 2026: Bigger badge drops, a Turbo sub discount, and AI training on streams
Twitch Updates · 2026-08-03 · Updated: 2026-08-03
After a feature-heavy July (see the July recap), August 2026 brings the topics that actually hit your wallet and your account: badge drops get bigger, Turbo gains a real subscription perk, and hanging over it all is the question of whether Twitch will soon use your streams to train AI. This article grows with the month — as new things land, I add them here. A lot of this first surfaced in the streaming newsletter tos.gg.
🎖️ Badge drops get bigger: up to 100 gifted subs, up to 24 hours of watch time
The most relevant change for BadgeBase: Twitch raised the ceilings on Creator Badge Drops. A badge tied to gifted subs can now require up to 100 gifted subs, and a watch-time badge up to 24 hours. That pushes collector badges noticeably towards "real effort": what used to be an afternoon is a whole day at the hardest tiers.
You can see it live already: the Egg from the Roblox event runs until August 26, the six EWC 2026 levels until August 24 — watch time up to 720 minutes, plus a sub level. Which of them are rare right now shows on the rarest list; the full monthly overview is in the August badge article, and to miss nothing, use the timeline or the iCal calendar.
🎁 Turbo × subs: 30% off a sub for Turbo subscribers
Twitch links Turbo to channel subs: with an active paid Turbo subscription you get 30% off one Tier 1 sub per month — and the discount stays on each renewal as long as Turbo is active. Caveats: one channel only, only channels that haven't opted out of shared discounts, not via the mobile apps, and not on channels you previously subscribed to. Drop Turbo and the sub goes back to full price.
For you as a collector, that means Turbo now pays off twice — ad-free viewing and a permanently cheaper sub. Fittingly, we're currently giving away Twitch Turbo: enter the giveaway. And supporting BadgeBase_de gets you in via the Pro Membership.
🤖 AI training on streams: the debate of the month
The biggest stir isn't a feature but an intention: according to streaming reporter Zach Bussey, Twitch and Amazon plan to use streams to train generative AI — video, audio and chat. An announcement is expected "in the coming months," despite internal friction; creators may get an opt-out for some of the training data. Nothing is official yet, but the worry is fair: Twitch's terms grant very broad rights to uploaded content.
It lines up with the AI mid-stream summary Twitch showed at TwitchCon Rotterdam, which drew pushback there too. My read: livestream data (moving image plus real interaction) is extremely valuable for AI — which is exactly why the fight over consent and opt-out will be Twitch's running story for the rest of the year.
🎧 DJ Program: no more VODs or pre-recorded content from August 1
A long-standing rule is now being enforced: in the DJ Program you must broadcast live from August 1 — no pre-recorded sets, no VOD-only channels. A warning first, then a channel ban. That, incidentally, is why we removed the old DJ badge workaround on BadgeBase: the ground around that badge is shifting.
⚖️ Patent dispute won
Quieter but worth noting: Twitch won a patent dispute over content-navigation systems. Not an everyday topic for viewers, but a signal that the platform is defending its core features legally.
🗣️ Dan Clancy: long-form still matters
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told The Wrap that long videos remain central for creators — even in the age of short clips. That fits the stories-to-recap direction from July: Twitch is deliberately positioning against the pure short-form pull.
🏙️ TwitchCon Berlin 2027?
Another rumor, but a fun one: TwitchCon 2027 may be held at Messe Berlin, according to UIT Holland. Nothing is official, but for the German community a TwitchCon on the doorstep would be a party. You'll find all confirmed TwitchCon badges under #twitchcon.
📉 Numbers: July slightly down
For context: Twitch was slightly below July 2025 year-over-year in July 2026 — but the decline is slowing. In parallel, Twitch and Amazon Ads teams were in Shanghai to grow the ad business. The platform is looking for its balance between growth pressure and creator trust, and that's exactly what makes the AI question above so delicate.
What to remember
In short: badge drops get more demanding (up to 100 gifts / 24h), Turbo now pays off for subbing, and on AI training keep an eye on whether and how an opt-out arrives. What changed on BadgeBase itself this month is in the changelog — and which badges count this year, in the 2026 leaderboard.
